Today, we commemorate Raoul Wallenberg Day in Canada and pay tribute to the heroic humanitarian. As a Swedish diplomat based in Budapest, Hungary, Raoul Wallenberg saved some 100,000 Hungarian Jews during the Holocaust by issuing protective passports and providing safe houses to Jews fleeing persecution and death. He tragically disappeared in 1945 following his arrest by Soviet forces, and to this day his fate remains unknown.

In 1963, Yad Vashem recognized Wallenberg as Righteous Among the Nations, and in 1985, the Government of Canada named Wallenberg its first honorary citizen. We honour his legacy of heroism and humanitarianism and are reminded of the difference one person can make in the face of hate.

Earlier today, FSWC President and CEO Michael Levitt was honoured to participate in the Hungarian Embassy's commemoration of Raoul Wallenberg.
