By Simon Busse (FSWC Educator)
Every Child Matters, written by Phyllis Webstad, (author of Phyllis’ Orange Shirt), and illustrated by Karlene Harvey, explains the meaning behind “every child matters.” Set on Turtle Island, the name some indigenous people use for North America, the story begins by explaining the connection of Indigenous peoples to the land, highlighting the rich and diverse aspects of their culture, including dance, music, language, teachings and ceremonies.
However, what happens when the uniqueness of this community is not recognized and respected by others? Webstad includes her own experience as a child in Canada’s disgraced residential school system and the lasting impact of how these facilities tried to strip away all aspects of her Indigenous identity and culture, and that of all Indigenous communities.
Available in French and English editions, Every Child Matters is a wonderful picture book, recommended for readers aged 6 to 10. There is a teacher lesson plan and resource booklet that can also be purchased to support use in your classroom.
