Speaker's Idol honours legacy of Simon Wiesenthal

DURHAM — Two Durham students are among the top 10 finalists in an Ontario-wide speech competition.

This is the seventh year for Speaker’s Idol, a competition presented by Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies.

The event honours the legacy of Wiesenthal, a Holocaust survivor and human rights activist.

Students in grades 6 to 12 were required to prepare a three-minute speech that incorporates the Wiesenthal quote “freedom of speech is not freedom to propagate hatred.”

The Durham finalists are Aqeela Ameen Majeed from Lincoln Avenue P.S. in Ajax, and Grace Patterson from Cartwright Central P.S. in Blackstock.

The finals takes place March 27 in Toronto and will see the 10 competitors present their speeches to a panel of judges.

Thank you to the Government of Ontario for their support of Speakers Idol 2018!
