Toronto (August 9, 2019) - Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) condemns Edmonton Journal’s decision to run an antisemitic cartoon in last week’s paper.

The cartoon, which portrays the recent Capital One hack, shows an old man with a hooked nose typing at a laptop with the words “data hacker” – despite the alleged hacker being a 33-year-old woman.

“The hacker depicted in this cartoon is very similar in appearance to drawings of Jews Nazis used in their propaganda. This antisemitic cartoon is uncalled for and the paper’s editorial staff should not have allowed it to make its way to print,” said FSWC President and CEO Avi Benlolo.

FSWC confirms that the cartoon is not posted on the Edmonton Journal’s website and has reached out to its managing editor to discuss the issue further.

Through FSWC’s educational workshops, such as on the award-winning Tour for Humanity, students learn about topics such as propaganda and antisemitism both during the Holocaust and today. Students are left empowered to make a positive change in the communities and stop hate from spreading in their communities.
