Toronto (April 4, 2019) - Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) is pleased that a private member’s bill seeking to prevent hate-promoting demonstrations on legislative grounds passed second reading today at Queen’s Park.

Bill 84, which was introduced by MPP Roman Baber and passed first reading in March, calls for an amendment to the Legislative Assembly Act to prohibit demonstrations that are “likely to promote hatred against any identifiable group from being permitted on legislative precinct grounds.”

“This bill sends a message that the promotion of hate against identifiable groups, like we’ve seen from the annual hate march Al Quds Day, is not only unwelcome at Queen’s Park, but throughout Ontario,” said FSWC President and CEO Avi Benlolo, who personally congratulated Baber following the second reading. “It’s also worth noting that the bill was unopposed, showing that the government stands united against the promotion of hatred.”
