Toronto (July 26, 2018) -Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) commends Canada for voting against arecent anti-Israel resolution at the United Nations in addition to voting infavour of calling on Hamas to release Israeli civilians and soldiers held inGaza.

The resolution presented at theUN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) on Tuesday, which included 22statements against Israel but failed to mention Hamas and its violence againstIsrael, passed 45-2. Canada and the US were the only countries that votedagainst the resolution.

Canada was also one of fivecountries – including the US, Colombia, Mexico and Uruguay – to vote in favourof including Israeli text in the resolution that calls for the “immediaterelease of the civilians and soldiers being held in Gaza by Hamas.” The ECOSOCinstead approved a text that calls on the release of all bodies withheld –which would include Palestinian terrorists responsible for killing Israelis.

“As the UN continues itsanti-Israel bias and failure to condemn Hamas for its human rights abusesagainst Palestinians, violence against Israel and calls for the murder of Jews,Canada has taken a strong stand for what is right,” said FSWC President and CEOAvi Benlolo. “The UN continues to take the side of terrorists, failing tocondemn countries and groups that have committed numerous human rightsviolations and instead targeting the only democratic state in the Middle Eastthat is defending its civilians against terrorism and violence.”
