Spirit of Hope New Date Announcement

Dear Friend:

Shalom!

I hope and trust my letter finds you and yours healthy and safe.

Due to an abundance of caution and in accordance with government directive, Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center’s Board of Directors and its management is postponing the Spirit of Hope Benefit from May 25th to Monday, December 7, 2020. This gives us a new timeline of eight months to optimistically get through this very challenging time, subject to health conditions to be continuously revisited.

The next number of months will be challenging for us all. With continued unity and strength we will get through this unprecedented time together. From my perspective, FSWC is here at the right moment - to ensure ethics and morality are maintained in these times of crisis. If we can learn from history, it's in times of trouble that our voice is needed most. FSWC is your voice.

This is why, our team of highly trained and educated professionals are communicating with educators and students; teaching online; providing resource material and ensuring that especially in times of darkness we inspire people into acts of compassion. At the same time, our communications advocacy team is monitoring and responding to antisemitic incidents and issues on a daily basis while defending Israel and the Jewish community.

Difficult days are ahead. But we are determined to work every single day to represent the life and legacy of Simon Wiesenthal. As we transition our Spirit of Hope fundraising campaign to December 7th and rebuild our program, we ask you to renew your support because we need your strength and we absolutely should not be letting our guard down.

If you need to reach me for any reason, please email me at president@fswc.ca.

To make your 2020 pledge and reach our campaign team, please email Elise at ekorne@fswc.ca or Ariel at awaks@fswc.ca.

We pray for this plague to pass. We pray for good health and wellness for all humanity. We pray for strength and resilience.

And we wish all of our donors and our friends a happy and healthy Passover, a blessed Good Friday and Easter and many good tidings for all.

Respectfully,

Avi Benlolo
President & CEO, Friends Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC)

As Israel Closes in On COVID-19 Vaccine, a New Problem Emerges for Haters of Israel

Rapid advances in Israel’s effort to develop and mass-market a vaccine for COVID-19 present a novel problem for haters of Israel – to boycott or not to boycott? On the one hand, leaders of the antisemitic BDS movement can win points for consistency by calling on people to refuse any life-saving vaccines produced in Israel. On the other hand, if BDSers give the green light to an Israeli vaccine - if they adopt the position that all products of Israel must be boycotted except the ones that are needed - their hypocrisy becomes unmistakable.

New York State Approves Hate Crimes Act

Legislation to combat antisemitism - named after Rabbi Josef Neumann who recently died of his wounds following the stabbing attack in Monsey during Hanukkah - has been approved by New York state legislators. The bill classifies any assault of a group based on its race or religion as a terror attack; allocates millions of dollars to vulnerable religious nonprofits and to support the state police's hate crime task force; and creates a statewide education curriculum on diversity and tolerance for students.
