Navy Chain of Command Recommends Dismissal of Sailor with Neo-Nazi History

The Royal Canadian Navy informed FSWC yesterday that following a command-level review of its previous decision to reinstate a sailor with a long history of neo-Nazi activity, a recommendation has been made by his chain of command to release him from the Canadian Armed Forces. This news follows months of vigorous advocacy efforts by FSWC to combat white supremacy and other forms of extremism in the military.

Ontario Police Ill-Equipped to Tackle Rising Hate Crimes, Report Says

According to a new report, police in Ontario are ill-equipped to combat rising hate crimes, with reasons including a "widespread lack of a clear focus and knowledge base among officers," lack of clarity on what constitutes a hate crime and the understanding that hate crimes cases have "low margin of success." At FSWC we are continuing to build and strengthen our educational programs for law enforcement officials to help ensure they can effectively combat hate in our communities.

U of T Launches Working Group to Combat Antisemitism on Campus

The University of Toronto announced last week that it has launched an Antisemitism Working Group to examine and address antisemitism on campus. FSWC appreciates this initiative by U of T to help address rising antisemitism and an increasingly hostile campus environment for its Jewish faculty and students, and we look forward to engaging with the working group and hearing about their road forward and the concrete steps they will be taking to tackle this problem.

Supreme Court Hears Holocaust Survivors’ Cases Against Hungary and Germany

The Supreme Court heard arguments on Monday over whether American courts have a role in deciding whether Hungary and Germany must pay for property said to have been stolen from Jews before and during the Second World War.
