University of Ottawa Holocaust Scholar Ordered to Apologize in Polish Libel Case

A Canadian Holocaust researcher and his co-editor have been ordered by a Polish court to apologize for suggesting a man collaborated with the Nazis during the Second World War. The ruling has angered Jewish rights organizations in Canada and abroad, who say it serves to cover up the history of Poles who were complicit in the genocide of Jews during the German occupation.

"It is shocking and shameful to see this effort unfold to hide and obscure the truth about the crimes committed against Polish Jews during the Holocaust," said Michael Levitt, president and CEO of Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center. "Poland cannot continue to bury the facts and silence Holocaust scholars, and its actions must be roundly rejected by Canada and the rest of the international community."

The International Criminal Court's Decision on Israel Is Biased and Wrong

The International Criminal Court (ICC) decided last week it would be moving forward with a war crimes probe into Israel’s military actions in the Palestinian territories - even though Israel is not a member of the court and despite the fact that the court would not claim one way or another whether the Palestinian territories even constitute a state. FSWC is calling for an end to the ongoing political witch hunt against Israel at the hands of the ICC and commends Canada for joining other democracies in voicing its concerns with the court’s recent decision and affirming its longstanding position that the ICC lacks any legal jurisdiction in Gaza and the West Bank.

IRB Hearings to Deport Helmut Oberlander, Canada’s Last Nazi-Era Suspect, Delayed

The final case against former Nazi death squad member Helmut Oberlander, which has taken 25 years in court, has been delayed further. An Immigration and Refugee Board admissibility hearing was set to begin Monday but was postponed after Oberlander's lawyers obtained an order from the Federal Court to stay the proceedings until at least March 19.

FSWC has expressed extreme disappointment in the delay, with FSWC President and CEO Michael Levitt stating, "The removal of Oberlander from Canada is long overdue. He has abused the legal system and evaded justice for far too long.”

A 95-year-old woman who worked at Stutthof concentration camp as a secretary has been charged with complicity in the murders of 10,000 people, in the first such case in recent years against a woman.

German prosecutors have charged a 100-year-old man with 3,518 counts of being an accessory to murder on allegations he served during the Second World War as a Nazi SS guard at Sachsenhausen concentration camp.

The city of Paris adopted the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism last week, joining a growing number of cities around the world, including London and more recently the French city of Nice, to make the move.
