Community Call to Action: Reject U of T Student Union's BDS Motion
Once again, we are seeing the antisemitic BDS movement rear its ugly head at the University of Toronto. This evening, the U of T Students' Union will be hosting its General Meeting, during which a BDS motion is set to be tabled. We join Hillel UofT and Hasbara Fellowships Canada in calling on undergraduate students at the St. George campus to attend this evening's UTSU meeting to reject this discriminatory motion.
Latvia to Reimburse Jewish Community for Properties of Holocaust Victims
After the Latvian Jews who owned, managed and frequented the buildings were killed during the Holocaust, the state took them over. Last week, the Latvian Parliament gave its final approval to a law that awards about $46 million to the Latvian Jewish community “to eliminate the historical unjust consequences” resulting from the Holocaust and activities under Soviet rule.
Ukraine Passes Law Criminalizing Antisemitism
Ukraine’s parliament passed a law on Wednesday criminalizing antisemitism. Antisemitism by an individual is now punishable by a fine or a prison sentence of up to five years, while public officials could also be banned from holding certain offices for up to three years.
In a First for an Israeli Prime Minister, Naftali Bennett Visits Bahrain
Prime Minister Naftali Bennett met with Bahrain’s king and crown prince this week during his landmark trip to Bahrain — the first visit by an Israeli prime minister. The visit comes after the two countries normalized ties in late 2020 as part of the Abraham Accords, and follows the prime minister's visit to the United Arab Emirates in December.
Arab Party Leader Rejects Amnesty’s Apartheid Label for Israel
Ra’am party head Mansour Abbas said Thursday he would not use the word “apartheid” to describe relations between Jews and Arabs within the country. This statement came after Amnesty International published a report claiming Israel has been committing apartheid against Palestinians, a claim rejected by numerous countries, including Canada, the US, the UK and Germany.
Ivan Reitman, ‘Ghostbusters’ Director and Son of Holocaust Survivors, Dies at Age 75
Jewish producer and director Ivan Reitman, known for his work on the blockbuster hit "Ghostbusters" along with other films, died Saturday night at his home in Montecito, California, at the age of 75. His mother survived Auschwitz, while his father escaped a Nazi concentration camp and was later a member of the Slovakian resistance.
