FSWC Letter to NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh: Anti-Israel Allegations by MPs “Unambiguously Untrue” and “Promote Antisemitic Narratives”

Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) has reached out to NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh denouncing misleading and libelous anti-Israel tweets posted earlier this week by MPs Charlie Angus and Leah Gazan and calling for public apologies from the party members. Both Twitter posts shared a misleading article from The Guardian about Israel’s coronavirus vaccination program, with MP Angus referring to Israel as an “#apartheidstate” and MP Gazan accusing Israel of violating the human rights of Palestinians by excluding them from the vaccine program.

In a letter to Leader Singh, FSWC Director of Policy Jaime Kirzner-Roberts stated these allegations are “unambiguously untrue” and “both solidify and promote antisemitic narratives and conspiracy theories about Jews and Israel.”

How Anti-Israel Voices Made a Hypocritical, Inaccurate Story on Vaccines

"Hatred of Israel always finds a way to target Israel. Instead of celebrating Israel’s accomplishment and learning from it, the goal of the critics is to find some misleading fault in Israel’s unprecedented program. Instead of asserting that countries might learn from this and also help Palestinians, the goal is simply to excoriate Israel," writes Seth Frantzman in the Jerusalem Post.

Lawyer Who Advertised in Pro-Nazi Newsletter 'Your Ward News' Cleared by Law Society

FSWC is dismayed by the Law Society of Ontario's decision to let a lawyer off the hook after he chose to advertise several years ago in Your Ward News, a publication that openly promoted hatred against Jews, women and so many others. In December, a Law Society committee announced that while the placement of the ad was not in the public interest and inconsistent with professionalism standards, no further action would be taken.

"The lawyer's decision to advertise in and provide financial support to a hate publication is completely unacceptable, and we find it hard to believe that he was unaware of the hateful views shared in the paper," FSWC stated in an online post.

Long Pandemic Could Add to Extremism, Decline in Democracy: Defence Department Report

A new research report by the Department of National Defence suggests the longer the COVID-19 pandemic rages, the stronger right-wing extremism and other threats in Canada and around the world are likely to become.

"It has been long known that times of crisis lead to a rise in extremism and hate. This should be a wake-up call to leaders at all levels of government to take strong action against the coronavirus not just for the health of Canadians, but also to protect our safety and democracy," FSWC stated in a post online.
