Three Canadian Jewish Groups Call for Removal of Incoming Human Rights Commissioner
Three Canadian Jewish groups - Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center, CIJA and B'nai Brith Canada - have called for the removal of Birju Dattani from his upcoming appointment as head of the Canadian Human Rights Commission (CHRC) over his alleged association with people linked to terror groups and history of antisemitic statements.
Jewish Community Relieved by Court Ruling Allowing U of T to Dismantle Encampment
Yesterday, Canadian Jewish groups, including Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center, expressed relief in response to the Ontario Superior Court of Justice granting an injunction to the University of Toronto against the anti-Israel encampment on its campus. The court ordered the removal of "any and all structures, tents, encampments, and items of personal property" by 6 p.m. today.
University of Waterloo Sues Pro-Palestinian Encampment for $1.5M
The University of Waterloo is suing the participants and organizers of the pro-Palestinian encampment on its main campus for $1.5 million. The court document published on the University’s website says the school is seeking "damages for trespass, damage to property, intimidation, and ejectment."
Two Toronto Synagogues Vandalized, One for Third Time
Two synagogues in Toronto were targeted in a series of vandalism incidents over the weekend. Toronto police are investigating after rocks were thrown at the Pride of Israel Synagogue and Kehillat Shaarei Torah synagogue, breaking the windows. Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center President and CEO Michael Levitt said that because of the incident, the Canada Day weekend was "not a happy one" for Jews of Canada.
Jewish Cemeteries Vandalized in Cincinnati, Montreal
In Montreal, vandals placed memorial stones in the shape of a Nazi swastika on top of headstones at the Kehal Israel Cemetery, while in Cincinnati, Ohio, vandals targeted two historic Jewish cemeteries, toppling and shattering some 176 gravesites.
FSWC denounced the incident in Montreal, calling it a "repulsive act of antisemitism" and "another reminder of what Canadian Jews are up against."
Thousands Sing, Dance and Celebrate at Pride Parade Until Protesters Strand Marchers and Floats Mid-Route
The Toronto Pride Parade was suddenly stopped mid-route, and then cancelled, by some 30 protesters who chanted "Free Palestine" and "Pride is a protest." The group, which called itself the Coalition Against Pinkwashing, left floats and marchers stranded three and a half hours into the parade.
Jewish Teachers File Antisemitism Complaint Against B.C. Teachers’ Federation
A group of B.C. teachers has launched a human rights complaint against their union, accusing the B.C. Teachers’ Federation of having "engaged in and enabled antisemitism." A labour lawyer who represents B.C. Teachers Against Antisemitism filed the complaint with the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal over what he called the "erasure of Jewish and Zionist voices and opinions" within the union and members’ workplaces.
Off-Duty Troop Killed, Another Wounded in Terror Stabbing by Arab Citizen at Karmiel Mall
An off-duty Israeli soldier, Aleksandr Iakiminskyi, 19, was killed and a second was wounded in a terror stabbing attack at a shopping mall in the northern city of Karmiel on Wednesday, police and medics said.
Tens of Thousands Crowd Tel Aviv Park for First Nova Concert Since Oct. 7 Massacre
Tens of thousands of people gathered in Tel Aviv’s HaYarkon Park on Thursday evening for what organizers dubbed a "healing concert." The concert was the first official event held by the Tribe of Nova since Oct. 7, when more than 360 partygoers were murdered and 40 others were abducted by Hamas terrorists at the Nova music festival.
