Canada Abstains from Anti-Israel Vote at UN

Last week FSWC expressed its concern after Canada decided to abstain on a UN resolution pertaining to the Israel-Gaza conflict. On June 13, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution condemning recent violence in the Gaza Strip. While Canada supported a US-sponsored amendment that condemned Hamas, it chose to abstain from voting on the resolution.

"We believe that Canada should’ve voted against, in defence of Israel, an allied nation of Canada," said FSWC President and CEO Avi Benlolo, who also said he is concerned that Canada is slipping with respect to its voting record and that the government’s attempt at taking a balanced perspective is coming at the cost of compromising Israel’s security.

Three rockets were fired from Gaza at southern Israel early Monday morning, two of which landed in Israel while a third reportedly landed in Gaza. No injuries were reported in what has been the first rocket launching against Israeli civilians in over two weeks.

According to a prominent Syrian-rights group, the terrorist organization Hezbollah has rejected Russia’s demands to withdraw from the Lebanese-Syrian border.
