Toronto Mayor Commits to Confronting Antisemitism Following Meeting with Jewish Community Leadership

In a powerful announcement today, Mayor John Tory confirmed he stands with the Jewish community against all forms of antisemitism. The statement was released following a special virtual meeting held yesterday between Mayor Tory - who was joined by Toronto Police Chief James Ramer and city councillors James Pasternak, Mike Colle and Josh Matlow – and Jewish community leadership. Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) President and CEO Michael Levitt and other Jewish community leaders spoke out about the rise in antisemitism and the impact it is having on Jews in Toronto.

FSWC Files Complaint with Western University After Prof Says Jewish Zionist Students Should be “Boycotted and Sanctioned”

FSWC has submitted a complaint to the dean of Western University’s Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry after a professor stated that if Jewish students’ “culture is Zionism at the expense of the Palestinian people, they should be boycotted and sanctioned.” In a letter, FSWC stated, "Any suggestion that Jewish students, Zionist or otherwise, should be boycotted by the university or any other institution is outrageous and blatantly antisemitic."

Toronto Jewish Groups See Increase in Hate Crimes

A trio of Toronto-based Jewish organizations - Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center, CIJA and B'nai Brith Canada - have seen a spike in antisemitic incidents across the country being reported to hate hotlines this month. "It’s not business as usual and this is a time we need to be feeling support across all levels of government,” said FSWC President and CEO Michael Levitt.

Google Diversity Head Said Jews Have ‘Insatiable Appetite for War’

Google’s head of diversity strategy said in a 2007 blog post that Jews have an "insatiable appetite for war" and an "insensitivity to the suffering [of] others." The comments were part of a longer meditation from Kamau Bobb, now head of diversity strategy at Google, that also slammed Israel’s military actions in Gaza and Lebanon that same year.
