Advertising Sign Vandalized with Antisemitic Message in Toronto
Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) has reached out to a local sign rental company demanding they take down a vandalized advertising sign located in the north end of Toronto that reads "Jews are owners! Occupiers!" The antisemitic message appearing on the sign, which sits on Bathurst Street just south of the 401, was first reported to FSWC on Saturday. The company that owns the sign confirmed to FSWC that the antisemitic message would be removed today.
‘This Is Not Vandalism. This Is Hate’: Stouffville Mayor Calls Out Vandal
FSWC was disturbed to learn that a park in Stouffville, Ontario was marred by hateful graffiti, including a swastika and the words “Black lives don’t matter,” over the weekend. We applaud Stouffville Mayor Iaian Lovatt, who took to social media vowing that the perpetrator of this hateful act would be identified and that charges would be laid. York Regional Police is currently investigating the incident.
Farrakhan Fox TV Broadcast Dropped Following SWC Protest
Following protests from the Simon Wiesenthal Center, it appears that Foxsoul.TV dropped its plans to broadcast Louis Farrakhan from its July 4th programming. A victory against hate and for unity and mutual respect for all Americans.
The center had called on Fox to cancel Farrakhan's speech due to his long record of making inflammatory and antisemitic statements and promoting antisemitic conspiracy theories.
Dutch National Rail Company Offers $5.6 Million for Holocaust Transport of Jews
The Dutch national rail company NS, which carried an estimated 102,000 Jews to their deaths during the Holocaust, recently announced it will be paying $5.6 million to Holocaust commemoration institutions after allocating more than $40 million last years toward compensating survivors. The World Jewish Restitution Organization and the Central Jewish Board of Dutch Jewish organization have since stated that the company has chosen to act with disregard to the Jewish community devastated by its actions during the Holocaust and compensation should also be offered to families of the Jews transported to their deaths.
Spanish Courts Strike Two Municipalities’ Support for Israel Boycotts
Two courts in Valencia, the third-largest city in Spain, recently voided the resolutions of two municipalities that declared their adherence to the BDS movement against Israel. One of the resolutions, by the nearby town of Vinalesa, was nullified more than a week ago by the 2nd Administrative Appeals Court of Valencia, with the judge calling the resolution "a form of incitement to hatred or discrimination according to ethnicity and nationality."
Brazil Names First Jewish Chief Justice
On Sunday, Luiz Fux became the first Jewish Supreme Federal Court (SFC) president in Brazil. This historic appointment comes after Fux made history in Brazil in 2011 when he became the first Jewish judge to be named to the bench at the SFC.
Universal Music First Major US Music Label to Open Branch in Israel
Universal Music Group will become the first major American music label to open a branch in Tel Aviv. The head of Universal's Israel branch said the branch “will provide a welcome boost for the entire Israeli artist community” and will strengthen the wider Israeli music ecosystem, helping local artists "reach the widest possible audience worldwide."
