Community Update: Toronto Police Investigating Following Violent Altercation Involving Antisemitic Slurs

Over the weekend, FSWC engaged with the Toronto Police Service Hate Crime Unit and was informed that an investigation has been underway following a report of a violent altercation involving antisemitic slurs that occurred at a bakery in the Avenue Road and Eglinton Avenue West area. We are disgusted by this incident and pleased that police have since identified a person of interest and are treating this incident as a suspected hate crime.

Anyone with information about the incident is being asked to submit a tip to police.

Ontario MPP to Speak at Event Organized by Group That Compares Abortion to the Holocaust

Ontario MPP Sam Oosterhoff faced criticism this week after agreeing to speak at an event organized by a group that has compared abortion to the Holocaust.

"It is extremely disappointing and disturbing to see an MPP as the featured speaker at an event organized by a group that has compared abortion to the Holocaust. There is no comparison and no place for the trivialization of the genocide of 6 million Jews," FSWC stated in an online post. Ontario Premier Doug Ford stated that "nothing should be compared to the Holocaust."

SWC's New 2021 Digital Terrorism & Hate Report Finds Jews, Asian Americans, African Americans, LGBTQ, Immigrants and Other Minority Groups Targeted

Yesterday, the Simon Wiesenthal Center released sobering examples and data in its annual Digital Terrorism & Hate report card and online study, which evaluates social media platforms’ policies on online hatred. While some social media giants took unprecedented steps to curb misinformation and hate speech in the past year, too often, those efforts have been strikingly selective, politically tainted, and grossly insufficient in addressing real-time hate and bigotry.

White Supremacist Propaganda Efforts Nearly Doubled in the U.S. in 2020

White supremacist propaganda efforts nearly doubled in the U.S. in 2020, according to a new report from the Anti-Defamation League’s Center on Extremism, marking the highest number recorded by the group. The group found a total of 5,125 cases of propaganda efforts which include distributing “racist, antisemitic and anti-LGBTQ fliers, stickers, banners and posters,” compared with 2,724 cases in 2019.

Eighty years after Carla Wainwright's Jewish grandparents were stripped of their German citizenship by the Nazi regime, she's reclaimed it — for herself and her children. This is allowed through German law for those "who lost their German citizenship under the Nazi regime due to political, racist or religious reasons and their descendants."

France to Return Nazi-Looted Klimt Painting to Jewish Family

France will return a painting by Gustav Klimt to the family of Holocaust victim Nora Stiasny who was forced to sell it very cheap shortly after the Nazis came to power in Austria in 1938. The work, which France acquired in 1980 knowing nothing of its violent history, will go to the descendants of Stiasny’s sister who managed to escape the Holocaust.

From Amsterdam to Toronto, World’s Mayors Rally to Stop Antisemitism

Mayors from some of the world’s major cities met in a virtual forum to discuss ways to stop the spread of antisemitism and eradicate prejudice from their municipalities. The summit presented practical methods for countering antisemitism, including sessions on education and the IHRA working definition of antisemitism; legislation, security, and law enforcement; overcoming trauma; and interfaith and cross-communal relations.
