Students Share Innovative Ideas on How to Change the World at 9th Annual Speakers Idol Speech Competition
Yesterday evening, 10 students from the Greater Toronto Area shared their ideas on how to change the world at the 9th annual Speakers Idol speech competition hosted by Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center, which was held virtually this year.
FSWC congratulates all of this year’s Speakers Idol winners and finalists who raised their voices for positive change and thanks the program’s judges and committee members who helped make the first-ever Zoom finale an immense success!
Antisemitic Incidents in the US Reached the Highest on Record in 2019, ADL Says
According to the Anti-Defamation League, antisemitic incidents in the U.S. reached the highest on record in 2019, with more than 2,100 acts of assault, vandalism and harassment reported last year. There was a 12% increase in incidents and 56% increase in assaults.
Facebook Reports Spike in Takedowns of Hate Speech, Terrorism
Facebook has reported a sharp increase in the number of posts it removed for promoting violence and hate speech. In the first quarter of 2020, it reportedly removed 4.7 million posts connected to organized hate organizations, up from 1.6 million in the previous quarter, as well as 9.6 million posts containing hate speech.
‘My Son Is a Hero’: Hundreds Attend Funeral for Soldier Killed in West Bank Raid
Yesterday hundreds of people attended the funeral of IDF soldier Amit Ben-Ygal who was killed overnight after he was struck in the head by a large stone or brick during an operation in the West Bank. The 21-year-old was the first IDF soldier to be killed in action in 2020.
Ukraine to Punish Police Chief Who Demanded List of Jewish Citizens
The Ukrainian government has committed to disciplining a high-ranking police official after he sent out a request in February to the head of Kolomyya's Jewish community for a list of all Jews living in the city. The head of the Ukrainian Jewish Committee called the request a reminder "of the terrible history of Ukrainian Jews."
