‘An Opportunity to Right a Wrong.’ Ajax Street Named After German Captain to Get New Moniker
Following a 4-3 vote by city council on Monday, a street in Ajax named after Hans Langsdorff - who was the captain of a German ship involved in a battle with Allied ships in 1939 - will finally be renamed. FSWC is pleased the street will be getting a new name, stating on social media "it's unacceptable for a street in Canada to be named after a captain of a Nazi warship or anyone who fought for Nazi Germany."
U.S. Hate Crimes Rise to Highest Level in More Than a Decade, FBI Report Says
According to an FBI report released earlier this week, hate crimes in the U.S. rose last year to the highest level in more than a decade while federal officials also recorded the highest number of hate-motivated killings since the FBI began collecting that data in the early 1990s. Last year, crimes targeting Jews and Jewish institutions increased to 953 incidents, up from 835 in 2018.
Keir Starmer Denies Jeremy Corbyn Labour Whip Despite End of Suspension
Following news that the UK Labour Party had decided to lift Jeremy Corbyn's suspension - which occurred after he downplayed a report detailing the party's mishandling of antisemitism complaints - Labour leader Keir Starmer has refused to readmit Corbyn as a Labour MP, stating Corbyn had "undermined and set back our work in restoring trust and confidence in the Labour party’s ability to tackle antisemitism.”
German Man Apologizes to Jewish Business Owner's Descendants for Nazi Grandfather's Actions
Last year, 49-year-old businessman Thomas Edelmann contacted a retired teacher in Israel to apologize for the actions of the grandfather he never met. This came after he confirmed the Edelmann family business property had previously been a store owned by a Jewish family that was forced to sell the property in 1938 following the introduction of the antisemitic Nuremberg laws.
