FSWC Pleased to Learn of Latest Rejection of BDS on Campus

FSWC is pleased to learn that the Student Federation of the University of Ottawa (SFUO) joins the growing list of student bodies rejecting the discriminatory BDS movement. A motion was brought before the SFUO's Board of Administration this Sunday to add several new "social justice" policies to the SFUO's policy handbook, including support for the BDS movement against Israel. Students quickly rallied to ensure that the motion was amended to remove any reference to BDS.

FSWC Educates Students About the Holocaust and Simon Wiesenthal 

Today FSWC provided workshops to students in Grades 1-6 in Concord. Over the course of two hours, FSWC's educator Elena saw approximately 250 students who were filled with lots of interesting questions and comments. With the Grade 1-3 group, Elena spent time talking about how violence, such as what was experienced by Simon Wiesenthal and other people during WWII, starts with words and when people are bystanders to exclusion, bullying and violence. The Grade 4-6 group learned more about the Holocaust and Simon's life after surviving the Holocaust.

At Least 26 Killed in Shooting at Texas Church

A fatal mass shooting at a baptist church in Texas yesterday - which the governor of Texas has declared the deadliest mass shooting in the state's history - has left at least 26 dead and 20 injured. According to news reports, the ages of victims range from 18 months old to 77 years old. The attacker has been identified by officials as a 26-year-old, but authorities have not publicly revealed a motive for the attack.

Antisemitic Incidents in US Skyrocketed in 2017

According to the Anti-Defamation League, there has been a surge in antisemitic incidents in the US. In just the first nine months of 2017, there was a 67 per cent increase in antisemitic incidents over the same period in 2016. The number of incidents is expected to double the figure from 2015. Antisemitic assaults, however, have dropped by 60 per cent. So far between January 1 and September 30, there were 1,299 incidents in the US.

US 'Will Leave' UN If Human Rights Council Doesn't Adopt Reforms: Haley

While speaking at the conference of the Israeli American Council, US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley stated that the US will pull out of the UN Human Rights Council if it does not adopt reforms - including removing Israel as a permanent item on its agenda. One of the proposed reforms calls for the removal of "Item 7," which requires a report on Israeli actions in the West Bank each time the panel convenes.

New Israeli Technology Helps Patients with Pain Management

A new Israeli technology that has made its way to Europe and will now by introduced to the Israeli market is revolutionizing the way pain is managed during surgery. This new system helps assess and monitor the pain levels of a patient undergoing surgery, enabling pain relief medication to be administered more effectively - ultimately reducing pain in the patient and minimizing side effects caused by excessive use of pain medication.

Saudi Arabia is blaming Iran after a ballistic missile was launched at the country's capital, Riyadh, warning that is could be "considered as an act of war." Iranian-backed Houthi fighters in Yemen had fired the missile on Saturday, but it was intercepted by Saudi air defenses. This attack comes as tensions between Iran and Saudi Arabia continue to escalate.

car bombing in the Syrian province of Deir Ezzor has reportedly killed at least 75 displaced civilians who had fled fighting in eastern Syria. The attack, carried out by the Islamic State, took place on Saturday and injured another 140 civilians. Fighting in the province has sent thousands of people fleeing for their lives.
