FSWC Concerned Over $110 Million in Aid Canada Has Committed to UNRWA

The Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of International Development, announced on Friday that Canada will be providing up to $50 million in aid to UNRWA over the next two years, bringing the total to $110 million in support for UNRWA that Canada has committed to since 2016.

"We respect the intent of our government, however remain steadfast concerned about utilizing UNRWA as a distributor of these funds. UNRWA has a track record of inciting hatred and violence and even enabling Hamas to hide arms used in its terrorist activity," said Avi Benlolo, FSWC President and CEO.

Is the Anti-Israel Tide in Europe Starting to Turn?

According to surveys conducted by Israel's Foreign Ministry in major European countries, support for Israel is on the rise. Based on the surveys, support for Israel has grown from 38% to 43%, with countries that were for many years hubs of hostility toward Israel - including Germany, Spain, Italy and the UK - experiencing a rising trend of support for Israel. The UK experienced a dramatic change through the year, with support for Israel increasing from 32% to 40%.

US Senate Approves Two Bills Sanctioning Hezbollah

Two bills sanctioning Hezbollah's funders and supporters were passed by the US Senate on Thursday. The human shields bill, which also condemns Hamas, imposes sanctions on members of the two terror groups who use civilians as human shields, as well as agencies of states that aid the groups in doing so. The second bill imposes sanctions on government entities that supposed Hezbollah's armed wing as well as companies and individuals who aid the group's fundraising or recruitment.

Tens of thousands of people came out on Saturday to march in protest against racism after growing concern over a series of xenophobic incidents. Marchers shouted anti-Nazi slogans and carried placards saying "More love, less hate" and "No room for Nazis."

Ultra-Orthodox Jewish Man Brutally Attacked In New York

An ultra-Orthodox Jewish man was taken to hospital after he was beaten at a traffic intersection in Brooklyn on Sunday. The 62-year-old appeared to be walking to morning services when a verbal argument broke out between him and the attacker, Farrukh Afzal. Afzal was seen getting out of a car and chasing the Jewish man into the middle of the intersection, where he beat him. The attacker is facing charges of hate crime assault, mischief and harassment.

Wiesenthal Center Praises Thai Authorities for the Removal of Offensive Nazi-Theme Decor from Bangkok-Area Hotel

The Simon Wiesenthal Center praised Thai authorities for removing a mural of Adolf Hitler as well as swastika decorations from a “Nazi-themed” guest room at the Love Villa Hotel in Nonthaburi. Following a direct protest from the Wiesenthal Center to Thai political and diplomatic leaders, Mueang Nonthaburi District authorities and soldiers entered the hotel and asked for the Nazi images to be taken down.

Israel Crowns 93-Year-Old as 'Miss Holocaust Survivor'

Ninety-three-year-old Tova Ringer, a Polish-born Holocaust survivor who lost her parents, sisters and grandmother in Auschwitz, was crowned "Miss Holocaust Survivor" on Sunday in an annual Israeli beauty pageant designed to put a smile on women who endured and whose youth was stolen in the Holocaust. A dozen contestants participated, cheered on by relatives and well-wishers.

Speaker of the Canadian House of Commons Geoff Regan was in Amman on Thursday, meeting with Jordan's prime minister and acting senate president to discuss bilateral ties between Canada and Jordan. The government officials discussed numerous topics, including the Syrian refugee influx and Jordan's role in hosting refugees, the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and efforts aimed at bolstering security and stability.

TONIGHT: A Conversation with Father Patrick Desbois

Tonight Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center will be welcoming Father Patrick Desbois in Toronto for a special conversation about his research and work in uncovering unknown execution sites from the Holocaust. Father Desbois has created a new understanding about the atrocities committed by the Germans and ordinary people - "neighbours" who helped facilitate the genocide.
