After Ottawa Monument Is Vandalized, Ontario Adopts International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s ‘Working Definition of Antisemitism’
Yesterday, Ontario became the first province in Canada to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) working definition of antisemitism. Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center joined Jewish community organizations CIJA, B'nai Brith Canada and JSpace Canada in applauding the Government of Ontario's decision, with FSWC President and CEO Michael Levitt stating that the IHRA definition is "a vital tool in the ongoing fight against hatred and discrimination targeting the Jewish community” and calling antisemitism "nothing less than an affront to our basic democratic values as Ontarians."
Nearly Half of Americans Know ‘Little About’ or ‘Never Heard of’ Antisemitism
According to a survey by the American Jewish Committee, some 46 per cent of Americans are unsure or have never heard of the term "antisemitism." The survey also found disagreement between Jews and non-Jews about whether antisemitism has increased, with 82 per cent of American Jews and 43 per cent of the general public believing antisemitism has increased in the past five years.
Hitler Speeches Sell In German Auction Despite Concerns It Could Encourage Neo-Nazis
Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler’s handwritten speech notes sold at an auction in Germany despite concerns the sale could encourage neo-Nazis. The head of the European Jewish Association called the auction irresponsible and insensitive, while the managing director of the Herman Historica said the auction house ensures any Nazi-era items are not sold to neo-Nazis and are often bought by museums and researchers.
Sudan to Normalize Ties with Israel, Leave U.S. List of Terrorism Sponsors
U.S. President Donald Trump announced Friday that Sudan will start to normalize ties with Israel, an announcement that followed the president's conditional agreement to remove Sudan from the list of state sponsors of terrorism if it pays compensation to American victims of terror attacks.
Czech Parliament Calls to Designate Hezbollah a Terrorist Group
The lower house of the Czech parliament voted 63-7 to adopt a motion that designates Hezbollah in its entirety as a terrorist group, calling the group “an indivisible whole and a terrorist organization that significantly destabilizes the Middle East region and, through its global network, also threatens all democracies.”
