FSWC Hosts Reception on Parliament Hill

Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center was in Ottawa today, welcoming government officials and staff for a reception and discussions on countering antisemitism and racism. It was a pleasure to meet with Andy Fillmore, Parliamentary Secretary for Canadian Heritage and Multiculturalism and the Hon. Andrew Scheer - who was very positive about FSWC's programs as well as countering antisemitism and supporting Israel. Thank you to everyone who joined us today!

Canada Votes to Strip Myanmar Leader of Honorary Canadian Citizenship

Canada’s Senate unanimously voted yesterday to strip de facto Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi of her honorary Canadian citizenship. The decision comes one week after MPs voted to revoke Suu Kyi’s citizenship because of her role in human rights violations against the Rohingya people in Myanmar that have forced around 700,000 to flee the country.

UN Secretary-General Speaks Out About Antisemitism and Power of Education

During a UNESCO-sponsored conference on antisemitism and education, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres spoke out about the rise in antisemitism and the duty everyone has to fight back. In his speech, he listed possible priorities to help counter antisemitism, including recognizing antisemitism as a problem to be addressed internationally, developing education programs that address antisemitism, and seeing diversity as a richness.

"This is an excellent denunciation of antisemitism by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who also spoke about the importance of educating to counter the hateful ideology. Special thanks to UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay for bringing this conference together," said FSWC President and CEO Avi Benlolo.

EU Committee Votes to Freeze $17 Million in Palestinian Aid Over School Book Incitement

The European Parliament's budgetary committee recently voted to freeze more than $17 million in aid to the Palestinian Authority if incitement against Israel is not removed from their school curriculum and textbooks. The bill is expected to go to a plenary vote in late October.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel Arrives in Israel

German Chancellor Angela Merkel arrived in Israel today, beginning her two-day visit to the country that will include dinner with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a visit to Yad Vashem and the Israel Museum, and lunch with President Reuven Rivlin. The visit was postponed for nearly a year and a half because of disagreements but symbolizes a close relationship between the two countries.

Israel Home to Third Most Artificial-Intelligence Startups in the World: Study

According to a new study by a top European institute, Israel has the third most artificial-intelligence startups in the world - a great achievement considering the country's relatively small size. The study reveals that Israel has 362 artificial-intelligence startups, comprising 10% of all startups in the field.

Three Palestinians have been reportedly indicted for conspiring to carry out terrorist attacks against Israelis. According to Israel's Shin Bet security agency, the three residents of the West Bank had contacted Hamas officials on Facebook with the aim of raising funds to stage terrorist attacks against Israeli civilians and soldiers in Judea and Samaria. The Shin Bet said two of the suspects admitted to engaging with Hamas military wing operatives, while an interrogation of the third suspect revealed he was in contact with a Hamas operative in Gaza and was scheduled to receive money and instructions to carry out a terrorist attack.

On November 5th at State of the Union, we will have the privilege to speak with and honour Stuart and Robbi Force for the incredible work they've done in fighting terrorism. After their son Taylor was murdered by a Palestinian terrorist in Israel, they took it upon themselves to get Congress to pass the Taylor Force Act and stop aid to the Palestinian Authority until they end payments to terrorists.
