FSWC Working with Canada’s Armed Forces in Effort to Address Hate and Extremism

Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center is working with the Canadian Armed Forces on an education and training strategy to support their new policies and directives on hate activity and extremism. While details of this partnership are still being firmed up, a virtual meeting was held on Friday, chaired by Lieutenant-General Wayne Eyre, between senior staff from the Army, Navy and Air Force and members of the FSWC team.

Green Party Leader Annamie Paul Has Lived a Life Unlike Other Politicians

Saturday night, Annamie Paul was announced as the new leader of the Green Party of Canada and made history by becoming Canada's first Black-Jewish party leader. FSWC congratulates Annamie on being elected leader of the Green Party and looks forward to working with her to tackle hate, racism, discrimination and other issues facing Canadians today.

'We Can't Just Let It Go': Jewish Community Condemns Stickers Appearing in Halifax

Antisemitic stickers with the Star of David and the words "The Bug That Backfired Covid-19," implying Jewish people are to blame for the spread of the coronavirus, have been appearing around Halifax in recent weeks. Members of Halifax's Jewish community have spoken out and reported the stickers to police.

Ontario Students Face Critical Gaps in Holocaust Education and Awareness

Concerns about whether young Canadians are being adequately educated about the Holocaust have grown louder in recent years, particularly as antisemitic incidents continue on an upward trajectory. “Unless teachers seek out training from organizations like ours, there is no standardized training to prepare teachers for this topic,” said Melissa Mikel, Director of Education at FSWC. "We need to begin Holocaust education at a younger age and provide teachers with appropriate training...We need to equip young people with the tools to think critically about our past if we want them to be engaged citizens in the present.”

YouTube Removes Louis Farrakhan’s Nation of Islam Channel

YouTube said it removed the video channel of the Nation of Islam, the organization led by longtime antisemite Louis Farrakhan, on October 2, stating the video-sharing platform terminates "any channel that repeatedly or egregiously violates" its "strict policies prohibiting hate speech."

Facebook to Ban QAnon-Themed Groups, Pages and Accounts in Crackdown

Facebook announced on Tuesday that it will ban any groups, pages or Instagram accounts that "represent" QAnon in an attempt to crack down on the growing movement that has roots in antisemitic conspiracy theories such as the Protocols of the Elders of Zion.

UAE Minister Vows 'Never Again' in Berlin Holocaust Memorial Visit Together with Israeli Counterpart

The United Arab Emirates foreign minister visited Germany’s main Holocaust memorial together with his counterpart from Israel and vowed “never again” on Tuesday. The two were in Berlin to discuss a variety of issues in promoting relations, just three weeks since Israel and the UAE signed normalization agreements.
