Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) approves of Montreal amending its ethics code to prohibit city councillors and mayors from discriminating on the basis of race, gender, religion and other grounds.

The city’s executive committee approved the amendment yesterday, just a week after a councillor made anti-Muslim comments.

“While the prohibition of discrimination should have already been part of the city’s ethics code, this is a positive step in the right direction,” said FSWC President and CEO Avi Benlolo. “Considering the current action being taken by the Quebec government, which is looking to ban religious symbols in the public service sector, Montreal’s decision to ensure elected officials do not promote discrimination is commendable.”

The amendment will be tabled in city council on April 15 and adopted on May 13.
