Flurry of Antisemitic Attacks Made Against Jews in South Africa

Toronto (June 22, 2018) - Friends of SimonWiesenthal Center (FSWC) is saddened to hear about a flurry of antisemiticattacks made against Jews in South Africa over the past 24 hours. 

According to the SouthAfrica Jewish Board of Deputies, attacks have taken place both on social mediaand in direct face-to-face encounters.

Online posts haveincluded hateful and threatening comments against Jewish people,including the use of words such as “scum”, “rats”, “pigs” and “the Holocaustwill be a picnic after we are done with you.” In addition to online attacks,passengers waiting for their suitcases from an El Al flight into South Africawere called “wicked Jews” by a man at the airport, as well as a mural with aGerman flag and swastika was painted on a wall in Johannesburg this week.
