TORONTO - Famous Holocaust survivor and Nazi hunter Simon Wiesenthal once said that “freedom is not a gift from heaven ... you have to fight for it every day.”
And that’s exactly the idea of Freedom Day, which will be celebrated at Yonge-Dundas Square Wednesday, rain or shine.
Now in its 10th year, the day pays tribute to Wiesenthal and tries to promote that idea that Canadians “should never forget,” says Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Centre (FWSC) CEO Avi Benlolo.
“This country is built on the ideology of freedom, democracy and human rights and that’s why we’re doing this,” he said last week.
