TORONTO (October 12, 2017) - Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC), a national Canadian organization with 30,000 member families, is calling on Councillor Ward Sutherland of Calgary to apologize for what appeared to be an antisemitic remark at a community hearing last night. The remark, "Johnny Jew from New York" came in response to a question from the moderator.
"What is most shocking about his remark in the video was how naturally the statement seems to come out of his mouth. There does not seem to be any remorse or understanding of its antisemitic significance. That is cause for concern," said Avi Benlolo, President and CEO of FSWC.
FSWC is encouraging Mr. Sutherland to immediately apologize and undertake sensitivity training.
