Toronto (October 19, 2020) – Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) commends Canada’s Navy and Air Force for joining the Army in issuing new directives aimed at combating hateful conduct and extremism within their ranks.

The directives, publicly released on Friday, outline the ways the Navy and Air Force will prevent and respond to hate incidents, including delivering hateful conduct training and education to members as well as conducting rigorous reporting and tracking of incidents and considering the failure of members to address hate incidents as complicity in the event.

“We are pleased to see Canadian military leadership take such groundbreaking action to combat hate and extremism within the ranks. These new directives come at a critical time as we see a rise in white supremacy and racism,” said Michael Levitt, FSWC president and CEO. “We look forward to continuing to work and cooperate with all branches of the Armed Forces in support of the new policies and to eradicate hateful conduct in the Canadian military.”
