TORONTO (November 17, 2017) –Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) is deeply concerned to learn thatthe University of Guelph is the latest campus to be hit with a campaign ofoffensive posters. It has been reported that numerous posters were found oncampus as well as in the city itself condemning Jewish, Muslim and LGBTQstudents through the use of "quotes" attributed to Mohammed.
Thesecome after a long list of disturbing posters, including white supremacistrecruitment flyers, that FSWC has been tracking on campuses from coast to coastsince the beginning of this school year. Earlier this week, flyerspromoting a white-based students group Students for Western Civilization postedwithout permission were removed from the University of Toronto, this time atthe Mississauga campus.
"We have reached out to the University ofGuelph to offer our support as we have with the other campus communitiestargeted. This is an epidemic with a virus that is spreading," said AviBenlolo, President and CEO of FSWC. "To get control, university leadershipmust step forward to enforce their policies of inclusion and respect withreal and immediate consequences for those who breach those policies. Universities’ obligation to provide a safe campus for all students demands a zero tolerance for hate. Clear direction is needed byadministrators so that they do not confuse hate speech and intolerance with freedom ofexpression."
Anyone with information regarding theseincidents at University of Guelph is asked to call Campus Community Police at 519-824-4120, ext. 52245, or your local police.
