TORONTO (Tuesday,September 27, 2017)- Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies(FSWC) congratulates Canada on the opening of the National HolocaustMonument in Ottawa today. For its inauguration, FSWC President and CEO AviBenlolo was in attendance to participate and lend support on behalf of30,000 FSWC members. Until today, Canada was the only allied nation without aHolocaust Monument in its capital.
In July 2011, FSWC waspleased to host the announcement of the National Holocaust Monument in itsCenter in Toronto. At the time, The Hon. Tim Uppal, who sponsored the privatemembers bill proclaiming the monument, presented a framed copy of the originalbill to Mr. Benlolo.
"I am delighted tobe a part of this historic inauguration, as Canada's capital receives its firstNational Holocaust Monument. Many people invested time, energy and funds intoestablishing this exceptional monument to the Holocaust. The monumentespecially comes at a very important time as antisemitism and hate is onthe rise in our community," said Avi Benlolo. "Hopefully this can actas an educational tool for all, not only making the Holocaust a more prominentdiscussion in classrooms, but also opening people's eyes to the consequences ofintolerance. This monument serves as a reminder of what took place during theHolocaust and honours the six million Jewish people murdered by theNazis."
FSWC proudly recognizesthis important monument which will reinforce its daily effort to promoteHolocaust Remembrance. Through its programs like Tour for Humanity, Toolsfor Tolerance, Freedom Day, Compassion to Action and Speakers Idol, FSWC willcontinue reinforcing Holocaust education to ensure that antisemitism, hate andintolerance never manifest again.
