Toronto (May 30, 2024) - Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) is outraged by the news of a second shooting at a Canadian Jewish school in five days, this time at Montreal’s Belz Yeshiva Ketana. This escalation in antisemitic violence is the latest in an unrelenting wave of antisemitic incidents in Canada since last October 7 that include previous shootings at Jewish schools. In most cases, the perpetrators of these hate crimes have not been arrested.
FSWC President and CEO Michael Levitt issued the following statement in response to the incident:
"This escalating violence against our community is intolerable and cannot continue for another moment. For months and months, we've been seeing on our streets and university campuses the open promotion and glorification of violence against Jews. History has taught us that what starts with words often leads to violence, and that’s the dark reality Jews in Canada are facing today. How many more attacks do Jewish communities have to suffer before there are tragic consequences? Immediate and decisive action is required to ensure the safety and security of Jewish communities across Canada. We call on all levels of government to implement urgent and comprehensive measures to protect Jewish Canadians."
