Friends of SimonWiesenthal Center (FSWC) is disappointed that Bill S-219, an Actto deter Iran-sponsored terrorism, incitement to hatred, and human rightsviolations, was defeated in the Senate on Wednesday.
Thispiece of legislation, introduced in 2016 by Saskatchewan Senator David Tkachuk, proposed stricter monitoring of the Iranian regime through improved reportingon terrorist activity, incitement and human rightsabuses and called for sanctions to be imposed accordingly.
“Iran isa serial state-sponsor of terror with no regard for human rights or globalsecurity,” said FSWC President and CEO Avi Benlolo. “Wednesday’s voterepresents a missed opportunity by Canada’s upper chamber to show leadership onan issue of international importance and could put Canada in the crosshairs ofnew U.S. sanctions.”
The bill wasdefeated at third reading by a vote of 44-33 with five abstentions.
