Toronto (July 29, 2019) - Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) is disappointed in today’s ruling by Canada’s Federal Court that states it is “unreasonable” to label wines produced in the West Bank as “Made in Israel.”

The ruling follows a request for judicial review of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) Complaints and Appeals Office’s (CAO) decision to allow wines from the West Bank to be labelled as products of Israel. The court ruled that an application for judicial review is allowed and remitted the matter back to the CAO for re-determination.

“The Canadian Jewish community is very disappointed in today’s ruling. Claiming West Bank wines can’t be labelled ‘Made in Israel’ effectively endorses the antisemitic BDS campaign,” said FSWC President and CEO Avi Benlolo.

In 2017, the CFIA reversed its decision to discontinue the importation and sales of wines from the West Bank labelled as products of Israel after determining the wines adhered to the Canada-Israel Free Trade Agreement.
