Holocaust Survivor Faigie Libman visited Dufferin Clark Public Library this evening, to share her testimony as a Holocaust survivor. Faigie's presentation was the second of two presentations that Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies (FSWC) was invited to share at the library. Last month, FSWC Educator Daniella presented the History of Holocaust and Genocide to a full room of interested community members.
Faigie's presentation received an overwhelming response from the over-flowing crowd that was in attendance. The audience - comprised of all ages and backgrounds - listened attentively as she recounted her story from being a child growing up in Lithuania to the trials of being moved to the Kaunas Ghetto through to her harrowing days as a prisoner in Stutthof Concentration Camp. Faigie also talked about life after the war, re-building her life with her mother and sharing a glimpse into her own family that, today, includes children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
One of the most moving moments of the evening came from a young man in the audience. He asked Faigie how he could get her to come to his school - and most importantly, he wanted to know how he could get his peers to listen up and appreciate the important testimony of survivors like Faigie. Faigie encouraged him to speak, to share what he had learned from the evening. She encouraged him to be the leader that would engage his peers in building an interest and understanding the need to be positive change-makers.
