Today the Tour for Humanity was in Courtice, Ontario, just east of Oshawa, working with all of the Grade 8 students from a local intermediate school. The day was very well-received by everyone that Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) Educator Elena spoke with, staff and students alike. Elena taught 5 workshops on the Canadian Experience. Several students knew about their own family's personal history during World War II and a few had great-grandfathers or other relatives that had fought for Canada during the war. A lot of students had heard about Anne Frank and Hana Brady and in one workshop kids were very curious about some of the details of Anne's life, asking several questions about what her life was like before the war and how her family was caught by the Nazis. Another thoughtful question Elena had was from one student who asked how Jewish people felt when they heard that Hitler had committed suicide. This was a new question and something Elena hadn't really considered before so she was really impressed that a 12 year old would be that empathetic and thoughtful to ask that question. Overall it was a great day and Elena thinks the students were equally impressed with the facility and the discussions that took place within it!
