Tour for Humanity finished up the week in Eastern Ontario at a public school in Belleville. This was our first stop at the school and they were very thankful and excited for the visit because they rarely have the money for any kind of field trip. Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) Educator Elena was teaching workshops to students between Grades 6 and 8 throughout the day. All of the students were very interested in the subject matter. Most kids had very little knowledge about our own history here in Canada so it was quite eye opening for them to hear about slavery in Canada, residential schools, and the "none is too many" attitude of the Canadian government towards Jewish refugees even as our military fought to defeat the Nazis. Elena led several conversations around the Nazis and once again we saw the consequences of some of the outlandish conspiracy documentaries out there that many students seem to watch. One student wanted to know whether Hitler could talk to aliens; another student guessed "illuminati" when Elena asked them who were the victims of the Nazis. This is troubling and a good reminder of how important the work we do is to help disspell these rumours.
