Today marked the first of a two-day visit to a middle school in Brampton. We had six Grade 8 classes on the bus participating in the Canadian Experience workshop and tomorrow we will have an additional six Grade 8 classes. The school is located in a very diverse area of the city, and as such the diversity was also reflected in the students. For Grade 8 classes, Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) Educator Daniella was pleasantly surprised by their participation. It was evident the school had done some preparation work for the Tour for Humanity visit. The organizing teacher later explained to Daniella that some of the students had sensitivities towards suicide (she didn’t elaborate further) and as such the school had put effort into anti-bullying and social awareness programming. Questions about the Holocaust focused primarily on Hitler committing suicide and the idea of misinformation. Daniella used the opportunity to continue the message of questioning authenticity, especially when something is available online.
