Today, Tour for Humanity was at a public school north of Toronto. There were a total of 6 classes made up of Grades 6, 7 and 8 students. They all took part in the Canadian Experience program. In this workshop, students learn about a variety of difficult topics in Canadian history including slavery, the Indian Residential Schools System, the voyage of the SS St. Louis and the systemic internment of Japanese Canadians during the Second World War. Following a review of the past, current issues including cyber bullying and modern-day examples of intolerance are examined and discussed.

Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) Educator Daniella really opened the students' eyes to these historical events both from an international and Canadian perspective. Not only did they learn about this history, they were presented with models of heroes, individuals who stood up in the face of hatred and intolerance to create positive change in their communities. The organizing teacher was very enthusiastic about the programs and interested in continuing the learning from the visit of the Tour for Humanity beyond today. Post-visit materials were shared with the teacher to support further learning.
