Toronto (February 8, 2021) – Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) is extremely disappointed to learn that a deportation hearing for former Nazi death squad member Helmut Oberlander has been delayed.

An Immigration and Refugee Board admissibility hearing was set to begin today but was postponed after Oberlander's lawyers obtained an order from the Federal Court to stay the proceedings until at least March 19.

"The removal of Oberlander from Canada is long overdue. He has abused the legal system and evaded justice for far too long,” said Michael Levitt, FSWC president and CEO. "The fact that Oberlander, a former Nazi death squad member, has remained in Canada for this long is disgraceful and disrespectful to the memories of those who suffered and lost their lives at the hands of the Nazis."
