Prime Minister Justin Trudeau IssuesStatement on Yom HaShoah

The PrimeMinister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, issued a statement on Sunday in recognitionof Yom HaShoah.

He stated: “The atrocities carried outduring the Holocaust have caused some people to ask whether it is possible tostill have faith in humanity. Yom HaShoah teaches us that we must maintain that faith. To honour the victims ofthe Holocaust is to recognize their humanity, which no human act can erase…. Today,I call on all Canadians to guard against a resurgence of anti-Semitism andracism, and to fight all forms of hatred and discrimination, whenever andwherever they occur. It is up to all of us to bring meaning to the solemn vow:‘Never again.’”

UN Chief Speaks Out Against Anti-Israel Bias and Antisemitism

Whilespeaking to delegates at the World Jewish Congress (WJC) Plenary Assembly onSunday, UnitedNations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres acknowledged the rise inantisemitism in Europe and North America and spoke in support of Israel.

“As secretary general of the United Nations I consider that the state ofIsrael needs to be treated as any other state,” he said, adding thatIsrael has an “undeniable right to exist and to live in peace and security withits neighbors” and “the modern form of antisemitism is the denial of theexistence of the state of Israel.”

He promised to “make sure that the United Nations is able to conduct allpossible actions for antisemitism to be condemned, and if possible eradicatedfrom the face of the earth.”

Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs:‘Canada Stands Shoulder to Shoulder with Israel’

ChrystiaFreeland, Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, spoke at the WJC Plenary Assemblyearlier today, stating, “Canada stands shoulder to shoulder with Israel. Westand with Israel and Jewish communities in Canada and around the world.” She also discussed theimportance of contributing to Israel's safety and security, statingthat it is an important component of Canada’s Middle East strategy and key tofighting ISIS. "When Canada works to counter extremism and terrorism,particularly in the Middle East, Israel is always a natural partner and a closeally," Freeland said.
