Toronto (April 23, 2019) - Today, one year since a van attack killed 10 innocent people and injured 16 others, Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) remembers and honours the victims of the tragedy and others who were affected.
“Today we mark one of the darkest and most tragic days in Toronto’s history and take time to remember the lives lost because of hate,” said FSWC President and CEO Avi Benlolo. “While the city was overcome by grief and sadness following the attack, there was an overwhelming amount of kindness and support from members of the community. In times of tragedy, we must all unite together and find ways to help each other in the healing process.”
Representatives of FSWC, located just steps from where the attack happened, will be at Mel Lastman Square today to honour the victims. Earlier today, Benlolo reflected on the tragedy while speaking with reporters at the square.
"What happened just outside FSWC headquarters on this exact day last year will remain with me for the rest of my life," Benlolo told reporters. "Everyone is affected by inhumane acts, wherever they may occur – as is the case with what happened in Sri Lanka this weekend...It’s up to us to remain vigilant and united and be ever mindful of our common humanity, putting our best feet forward, as the community has done this past year."
