Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) is urging the City of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu in Quebec to rename a street and park named after a now-deceased farmer, Alphonse Waegener, who had banned Jewish people from renting or buying homes on land he owned in the 1950s and 1960s.

While a Superior Court judge recently overturned the condition of sale due to its discriminatory nature, a street and park named after Waegener remain. According to La Presse, Waegener’s son said his father did not like that “the Jews…become masters of everything.”

“In light of this news, we are urging city council to begin the steps to renaming these sites that were named after an individual who clearly held antisemitic views and discriminated against Jewish people and who therefore should not be receiving any kind of recognition,” said FSWC president and CEO Avi Benlolo.
