TORONTO (February 15, 2018) - Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) urges the federalNDP to oppose the resolutions targeting Israel that are proposed at the upcomingNDP Convention in Ottawa.
According to the NDP Convention agenda, numerousresolutions attacking Israel will be brought forward – including onetitled “Solidarity with Palestine” that states a “two-state solutionis dead” and calls for a “one-person, one-vote, democratic secular Palestine.”Other resolutions call on the NDP to support a boycott of Israeli products, condemn the United States’ decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital ofIsrael, and implement economic sanctions against Israel.
“Targeting the Jewish people of Israel through boycotts andsanctions is a discriminatory endeavor thatjeopardizes the very legitimacy of the NDP, and supporting such one-sidedsentiments that have been discounted by the international community, includingthe IHRA, will cause the party to lose credibility in being an equal and fairbroker of peace and tolerance,” said FSWC President and CEO Avi Benlolo.“Israel has a longstanding tradition of unions and socialism coupled with avibrant civil society movement that operates in a vibrant democracy.Conversely, the Palestinians have not elected a president since 2005, while thearmed faction in Gaza, Hamas, continues to call for the elimination of Israeland the Jewish people. The NDP has too much credibility at stake to endorse aracist practice.”
Recently, FSWC senta letter to the NDP president expressing concern regarding an anti-Israelresolution that called on the NDP to support the antisemitic BDS movement.
