Yesterday marked an extremely successful day as FSWC met with Canadian political leaders on Parliament Hill to spread a message of unity and democracy, as well as celebrate the beginning of the Jewish New Year.
The Rosh Hashanah reception was filled to capacity by members of all parties, ambassadors and community leaders. MPs from all three parties - Michael Levitt, David Sweet and Murray Rankin - happily co-chaired the event.
"This is a special moment where we are gathered together with people of all faiths standing with the Jewish community to mark the New Year - a time of renewal and strengthening for Jewish people all over the world," said FSWC President and CEO Avi Benlolo during his welcoming speech before outlining the importance of education in combating racism and antisemitism. "There is a reason Rosh Hashanah put us here together today in this room. As MPs and people of influence, you are in a distinct position to keep making the world a better place."
Prior to the event, FSWC met with MPs Michael Levitt, Ali Ehsassi, Marco Mendicino and Bill Blair, focusing the meeting on hate crime laws in Canada. Engaging discussions with Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Immigration and Citizenship, and Elizabeth May, leader of the Green Party, also took place, with Hussen welcoming the tools and educational programs FSWC offered to help absorb new immigrants and ensure they are familiar with Canadian values.
During Question Period, FSWC was recognized in the House twice by both the Conservative and NDP parties and antisemitism was vigorously denounced from all sides. FSWC would like to thank all leaders for the strong support that was shown yesterday and for showing their commitment to working with the organization to combat antisemitism and intolerance in Canada.
