Toronto (November 16, 2017) –Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies (FSWC) is pleasedto learn that Iran has lost its bid to become the next chair of the ExecutiveBoard of UNESCO.
FSWC launched a community-wide petition in advance ofthe vote to build awareness and pressure so to ensure that Iran, with its longhistory of human rights abuses, not be elected to this key position.
“While there are stillconcerns ahead, UNESCO has taken one small step forward in restoring itscredibility on the international stage following resolutions passed this yeardenying the eternal Jewish link to the Temple Mount and the Land of Israel,”said Avi Benlolo, President and CEO of FSWC. “We thank the thousands ofcommunity members that shared our concern by signing the petition FSWC launchedand adding to the international outcry that had a direct impact in today’soutcome.”
