TORONTO (September 26, 2017) – Last week, “KKK” wasdiscovered spray painted on the garage door of former football player CraigEllis’ home in Edmonton. Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) is shockedby this disturbing display of racism, but is also heartened to learn thatnearby residents united to help remove the racist graffiti.
“Hatred of any religion or race cannot be tolerated in ourcommunities, and it’s especially concerning when such displays of hatred takeplace in diverse Canadian neighbourhoods,” said FSWC President and CEO AviBenlolo. “However, for every person that displays hate, there are many morepeople that are willing to take the initiative to show acceptance andcompassion, and that is the kind of unity we must continue to push forward.”
According to Edmonton police, the incident is beinginvestigated as a hate crime. Police also stated that while this is an isolatedincident, they are concerned about the atmosphere of empowerment the alt-rightmight feel and have been on alert – particularly following the events that tookplace in Charlottesville.
