TORONTO (November 2, 2017) - FSWChas learned that the Students' Society of McGill University (SSMU) JudicialBoard has released an interim order maintaining the status quo of the makeup ofthe Board of Directors pending a full review of the SSMU's General Assemblyresolution that permitted a divided vote on the presented slate. Thatresolution allowed a small minority of the student body to remove threestudents, including the only Jewish member, from the Board amidst allegationsof antisemitism. Pending a full review by its Judicial Board, this interimorder will mean that two of the three voted out will retain their Board rolesfor now. The third student was newly nominated this fall and therefore was not part of the status quo.
"This is a positive development after what was a verytroubling decision made by students at McGill University," said FSWCPresident and CEO Avi Benlolo. "However, we must not forget the clearantisemitism that took place during last week's vote and demand that aninvestigation into the matter continues regardless of the suspension'soutcome."
FSWC has been in touch with the university's principal andvice-chancellor, Suzanne Fortier, who has given her assurances that a fullinvestigation is underway. At this time, the organization's campus affairsrepresentative is on the ground speaking with student leaders and collaboratingwith other organizations to ensure the issue of antisemitism on campus isexamined and dealt with.
