TORONTO (April 24, 2017) – Newly released documents ofthe United Nations War Crimes Commission (UNWCC) went public on Friday – just threedays before people around the world began commemorating Yom HaShoah. Thesedocuments are available at the Wiener Library for the Study of Holocaust andGenocide in London after being inaccessible for 70 years.
Accordingto the archive, Allied powers knew about the Holocaust two years earlier thanpreviously assumed and went as far as making efforts to prosecute Adolf Hitlerand Nazi war criminals – efforts that were not followed through, resulting inthe deaths of six million Jews.
“Thesenewly released UN documents reveal how much Allies knew and how little theychose to do about the millions of Jews that were being murdered in Europe,” statedFSWC President and CEO Avi Benlolo, who discussed the documents in his latest editorial. “While we remember the liveslost during the Holocaust, we must remind ourselves of the inaction thatallowed this atrocity to occur and what we can do to ensure history is notrepeated anywhere else in the world.”
Thisevening, between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m., Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center will beholding a memorial at its office to honour those who perished during theHolocaust. The evening will begin with a candle-lighting ceremony, followed bya film screening of the film I Have NeverForgotten You – a documentary about Simon Wiesenthal, a Holocaust survivorand Nazi hunter.
Benlolois available to speak to media today about the UN archive and the importance ofcommemorating Yom HaShoah.
