Toronto (July 16, 2018) – Regina police are investigating after a man was filmed giving the Nazi salute and yelling “Heil Hitler” at a protest camp in Regina last Saturday.
Police informed Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) that the incident took place at Wascana Park across from the Saskatchewan Legislature, where an unknown adult male was reportedly behaving in an intimidating manner towards demonstrators.
The man allegedly claimed his “German rights” were being violated and wrote “Free Camping” on a sign. Officers confiscated the man’s kitchen knife before he voluntarily left the scene. No one was injured in the incident.
“There is a clear line between freedom of expression and hate speech,” said FSWC President and CEO Avi Benlolo. “The Nazi salute is offensive not only to the Jewish community, but to any minority groups. Such acts of intimidation and displays of hatred cannot be taken lightly and must be investigated by police thoroughly.”
Regina Police are asking members of the public to come forward with any additional information.
