Following a conference of alt-right supporters ofPresident-elect Donald Trump in Washington this past weekend, as well as arally which included movement leader Richard Spencer quoting Nazi propaganda and declaring, “HailTrump, hail our people, hail victory,” theSimon Wiesenthal Center has called on the U.S. President-Elect to speak out forciblyagainst the white supremacists and neo-Nazis who support him.
“Watching Spencer using Nazi slogans to spew forth his hate wassickening,” saidRabbis Marvin Hier and Abraham Cooper, Founder and Dean and Associate Dean ofthe Simon Wiesenthal Center. “The fact that the speech was given in the Nation’s Capitol, not far fromArlington National Cemetery - where some of the 418,000 American servicemen andwomen who sacrificed their lives in order to defeat Nazism are interred - isbeyond the pale and deserves condemnation from the President-elect on down . .. We call on our future President and Commander in Chief to take on Spenser andhis ilk directly," added Center officials.
“I echo the sentiments of my colleagues in the U.S., who are confronting anewly empowered white supremacist movement which proudly supports the most evilideology the world has ever seen,” said Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center forHolocaust Studies President & CEO Avi Benlolo. “The anxiety felt by Jewishcommunities and minority groups across the U.S. is palpable; sadly, we haveseen this antisemitic, racist hatred spill over into Canada in the past coupleof weeks as well. Now is the time for the leaders of our civil institutions tofight against hatred and intolerance, to dispel fear and anxiety, and to worktoward fostering the values of acceptance, empathy and tolerance.”
